Four Steps to Rocking Your Portrait Session

It's normal to be a little nervous before a photo session. You might be thinking, "I don't know what I'm doing" or "I'm not a model." But you don't have to be a professional model to rock your shoot. Everyone is capable of doing these four steps so that you feel great during your shoot and your inner beauty shines through in your photos. You got this!

Step One: Prep

This step will help you with the other steps. You'll want to feel amazing during your shoot, and doing things like wearing clothes you love and getting your hair and makeup done will really help you feel that way.

You're not alone here! You and I will discuss things like wardrobe and location to help you get prepped. If you Pinterest, you can make a Pinterest board to share with me of styles, poses, and other things you like. Make sure to ask me any questions you have because I want to make sure you are totally ready and comfortable.

Step Two: Trust Me

Most people I photograph are not professional models, so I have spent a lot of time learning how to help you relax and find flattering poses. I'll tell you if your hair is out of place or your bra strap is showing. If you are standing awkwardly, I'll guide you to a better pose.

So you don't need to worry about studying poses or thinking a million thoughts about what every part of your body is looking like in that pose. All you have to do is relax, be yourself, and trust me.

Step Three: Love Yourself

I have a lot of people come into a session saying they hate parts of themselves. Their profile. Their arms. Their smile. And I get it. I used to spend a lot of time thinking about parts of myself I didn't like and trying to hide them. We are trained to hate our bodies. But everyone you care about has already seen your profile and your arms and your smile. And they love them.

Of course, if you feel you should tell me something that you'd like me to be extra diligent about photographing in a flattering way, please tell me. And then...forget about it. Do you really want to spend your whole photo session not fully smiling? Or never turning to the side? Or trying to hide your arms? You will feel so much more relaxed and beautiful if you focus on the parts of yourself that you love. And I would love to hear about those too of course!

Step Four: Commit!

This is where it gets really fun. During your portrait session, we'll do fun and creative poses. I may ask you to spin around, lay on the ground, or jump in the air. The best way to do this is to go all in. Imagine you are a professional model as you're laying in the grass. Jump with joy. Spin with gusto and a huge smile. If you feel yourself starting to laugh when you're doing a "serious" pose, let it out! Even if you're simply leaning against a wall, this is your chance to be the most badass version of yourself leaning against that wall.
