“Know your own happiness. You want nothing but patience- or give it a more fascinating name, call it hope." -Jane Austen, Sense & Sensibility
I thought about filling this post with Jane Austen quotes and calling it a day. That would have made me really happy. But it makes me happier to do a shout out to the lovely ladies who made these portraits come to life.
Jennifer O'Leary is the magical makeup artist who saw my vision perfectly and created romantic Victorian-inspired makeup and hair. I hope she will still hang out with me when she's famous. Molly White is the redhaired model who bravely said "yes" to all the crazy things I asked of her. Can I wrap you in tulle? Can I put dead bugs on you? This kind of subtle modeling can be deceptively difficult, and she did it beautifully.
If you'd love to star in some amazing portraits of your own, let's get together and chat about what style would be perfect for you!
HOW I CREATED THIS ROMANTIC LIGHTING
I wanted the light to be soft and for the shadows to be dark. Doesn't that sound romantic?
I only used one studio monolight (an AlienBees B400) for these portraits, but it had a big modifier: a 64" Paul Buff PLM with a diffuser cover. The light was about 45 degrees to the model's left and a few feet above her. There was no reflector because I wanted the dark shadows. I kept her far from the seamless grey backdrop so that it too stayed dark. Simple!
